I was part of a team that designed and developed an autonomous drone for data collection and exploration of the Martian surface. My primary role was lead of the Hardware Subsystem, focused on the design and development of the Hardware Subsystem. This included selecting hardware components that satisfied the project requirements.
Project requirements included: a battery to supply energy determined through calculations based on the thrust necessary for the system, a LIDAR sensor for altitude determination, and a flight computer to provide a platform for the software to be implemented for flight controls. These components were tested in the full system through various static and operational tests.
The full system was designed to operate as a hexacopter with a range of 1km per flight. The structural body is able to house specific scientific instruments and payloads specific to the parent mission of which the final product of this project was intended.
Over the course of this project, I acquired skills in team coordination and cooperation, technical document creation, budgeting, technical, and engineering methods.
